I found the radio hobby during high school.  My father had purchased a Kenwood R2000 receiver and I would spend the evenings running through the bands listening to shortwave broadcast stations from all over the world, traffic on the aircraft bands, as well as hams talking to each other every night.  I still have the radio in my shack to this day.  My senior year in high school, I was taking a circuits class as an elective.  The instructor was a ham and had started a ham club that year.  I was interested but learning the code (cw) scared me away.  I tinkered with CB for a bit, but eventually got interested in other things.

Fast forward about 20 years.  My father just passed the Kenwood receiver down to me and I rediscovered the enjoyment in radio.  I did a little research and found that the code requirement to get a ham licence had been dropped.  I studied for my tech license and received it in 2011.  I upgraded to general in 2012 and extra in 2013.  I have a home station, but I mostly enjoy portable work and parks-on-the-air activations.  I am a big fan of the digital modes and the marriage of radio and computer fascinates me.  I first got interested in PSK31 and still to this day it is my favorite digital mode.  I got into JT65 and lately, I have been enjoying FT8 (although some in our club say this isn't real ham radio).  I run an APRS Igate in the Panama City area as well as a packet bulletin board on 145.050 MHz.

I enjoy sharing the many aspects of this hobby with people on youtube.

    1. Sorry for the very late reply. I just found your message. You can find these ties on Amazon.com. They are called "GearTie" from Nite Ize. You may be able to find them other places as well.
